3 Easy Breastfeeding Positions

Although breastfeeding is a natural activity, at the same time it's a skill that takes time to learn for both mom and baby. Your baby might not be able to latch on your breast at first, or you might feel exhausted after many trials. But remember, don't give up. Breastfeeding tends to get easier with practice only. The whole world is fighting for immunity because of the pandemic, and the only immunity you can give your infant till six months is through breastmilk.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about 83% of mothers breastfeed soon after birth, and only 57% nurse their baby after six months. The best breastfeeding position is when a baby latches on to the breast well and mother is comfortable without having any strain on muscles and back. There are many breastfeeding positions that may work for each mother.

Here I am sharing three easy and popular positions of breastfeeding. Read on to know what they are.

Cradle Position

The most comfortable position for the new moms. This is one of the positions which we always picture when we imagine of breastfeeding. In this position, seat upright, support your baby's head on your elbow and rest of the body against your chest. The mum and baby should be in a chest to chest position.

Cross Cradle Position

This position is comfortable for a good latch, as you can monitor your baby's head to get a proper latch on the breast. Seat comfortable in an upright position, support your baby's full weight with the one arm. With another hand support the baby's neck and head. You can also support your breast if required.

Side Lying

Definitely a preferred position for most of the mums who need rest, but this position is not much recommended for the new born babies. Ideal for babies older than 25 to 28days, till then the baby also learnt a proper latch. In this position, try to keep the baby's head little upright with some baby pillow or rolled clothes. Lie down comfortably on bed or recliner, place your baby next to you, chest to chest and tummy to tummy. Keep a pillow against the baby back to prevent him from rolling back. Also to support your head and arm use a pillow.

Important Things To Remember For Any Breastfeeding Position

  • Always make sure your little one is comfortable. In any position, the baby should be supported and stable everytime. Ensure his head, shoulders and spine are in alignment.

  • Take a proper seat where you can relax and feed your baby without any disturbance.

  • Ensure you are relaxed and comfortable too. Use pillow, cushions, rolled clothes or towels to support your back and arms. After-all, if you will be comfortable then only you can give proper support while holding your baby.

  • Ensure your baby is latching on or not. A good latch is necessary to fill baby tummy as well as comfortable breastfeeding.

  • No matter whatever is the position, make sure the infant can access the nipple without any strain.

  • Make sure nothing is covering the baby’s nose and neck is not bent.

There are many other breastfeeding positions also, but the right position is that in which you both are comfortable. New moms don't panic, you will get initial training from hospital only. For more assistance you can call or meet lactation consultants also.
