With the outbreak of Covid 19, the world is suffering through a major crisis. Many countries, including India as well, are in lockdown in order to take precautions and break the chain of deadly virus of Covid-19. In this pandemic situation, we really need to maintain extra care, hygiene and diet for our babies.
Immune system develops in babies after 2-3 months. Till six months of baby, breast milk is good to boost the immune system. After 6 months the baby moves to solid food. So here are some foods and habits to improve your baby's immunity power.
Breastfeeding
Breastfeeding is the most natural immune booster for babies. The first milk or the colostrum is rich in antibodies and white blood cells helps in building a strong immune system of your baby. Breastfeeding the first milk to your baby helps him/her to fight against the germs which causes infections. Colostrum creates a barrier between the baby's stomach and intestine which prevents infections and allergies caused to the baby.
Skin to skin touch for newborn
What more soothing and calming therapy for a newborn more than mother's touch. Giving skin to skin touch also helps in building the immunity of the newborn. It's also known as Kangaroo care. Along with the breastfeeding skin to skin touch for a newborn is most beneficial. Fathers can also give skin to skin touch to the baby. This will help in boosting immunity as well as emotional connect between father and baby.
Sleep on time The most important and disciplinary habit we need to focus on these days is having a routine sleep time. Lack of sleep can weaken babies strength and immunity which may invite unwanted infections. Proper sleep is as much necessary as we need a balanced and healthy diet. Control on Antibiotics intake If a baby gets a cold, cough or flu, we as a parents, immediately rush to the pediatrician to get prescribed for antibiotics. No doubt these antibiotics give instant relief to babies but the worst truth is that it weakens the immunity of the baby. For regular cases like cold and flu in babies we should avoid giving antibiotics everytime. Try home remedies for two to three days, get prescribed by pediatricians only if you think it's really necessary. If antibiotics intake is regular they become ineffective in killing the bacteria and makes the baby antibiotic resistant.

Spinach, sweet potatoes, potatoes, tomatoes, broccoli, amla are some of the vegetables which we can feed our baby in puree form and help in boosting the immunity power. Plain yogurt is a great source to get probiotics, the good bacteria which helps in keeping the gut healthy. The probiotics are good for colic babies as it aids digestion and reduces the gassiness and colic in infants. If your baby is on a solid diet and above 7 months you can introduce plain yogurt to him/her. Vaccinations The best and an effective way of protecting babies from disease is to immunize babies. Every baby should get the compulsory vaccinations which are mentioned by the government. Vaccines are safe, effective and help protect babies from many diseases and illnesses. Maintain Hygiene The most important and the necessary step in this Coronavirus era is to maintain hygiene. Give a germ free environment to your baby, and protect them from getting infected. Washing hands with hand wash or any soap till 20 secs will help you to get protected not only from the covid-19 virus but all unwanted viruses and bacteria. Always touch infants with sterilized hands, encourage older infants to wash hands and avoid touching dirty things even around home. Make sure your floors are clean and disinfectants everyday, if your baby is in crawling age. Babies had the habit of putting everything in their mouth, causing harmful bacteria to enter orally. Therefore, clean all the surfaces regularly where usually your baby can reach, toys, cots, sterilize baby utensils and feeding bottles. With these simple steps, parents can build the baby's immune system from childhood. A healthy practice of eating nutritious diet and making some good habits as a routine can help them to give a lifetime of good well being.
