Things You Should Know When You Are Breastfeeding

Updated: Jan 12, 2022

Breastfeeding your baby is a blessing for new moms. It's a beautiful bonding between mom and baby, and also helps to deliver the nutrients to your growing baby.

Well, if you are a nursing mom, then you should definitely know these seven breastfeeding hygiene tips. Read on to know.

Do not use deodorant

Nursing mothers should avoid deodorants and antiperspirants because they contain harmful chemicals. The underarm skin is the most delicate area of your body and it may easily pass from your arms to breast while applying on your body. This may unknowingly pass on to the baby when they take their feed.

No need to clean nipples

Yes, this is true. If you are a nursing mother, you do not need to clean the nipples every time you breastfeed your baby. Breast Milk contains many factors that help to inhibit the growth of the bacteria. In fact, bacteria from the surface of your breast can help develop your baby's gut microbiome.

Invest in good quality of Bra

Always invest in a good quality nursing bra. Never compromise with the fitting and quality of the bra even if you have to pay a few extra bucks. I will recommend you to wear an “Inner sense” feeding bra, they are made up of Anti bacterial fabric. Also fitting is awesome and easily accessible while nursing your baby.

Avoid underwire and sports bra while nursing, your breast may feel pain and discomfort.

Change you nursing pad frequently

Nursing pads are one of the great postpartum accessories for the working mothers. They act as a barrier between your breast and outer layers of your outfit. If you are getting leakage issues while breastfeeding and want to avoid the awkward situation in public, definitely try a nursing pad. While using a nursing pad you must change it frequently as soon as it gets wet. Doing this, not only keeps you hygienic but also protects you from chances of rashes, redness and irritation.

Get comfortable while breastfeeding

Nursing mothers have to spend a lot of time while feeding their baby sitting in one place. Therefore, it is very necessary to follow below two points while you are ready for breastfeeding:

- to hold your baby in the right position.

- you need to sit comfortably to avoid any kind of back pain, shoulder and neck pain.

Use a good quality of feeding pillow to maintain a good posture and you can also hold your baby comfortably. You can also use two three soft pillows to support your back and sit comfortably.

Control diet while breastfeeding

Though most of the doctors recommend eating everything to nursing mothers, whereas, I, being a mother, feel that feeding moms should have a controlled diet. Always avoid gassy, spicy and junk food, because the baby may feel colic because of your consumed diet.

Include green veggies like raw papaya, bottle-gourd(lauki/dudhi), raw banana and drumsticks in your diet. These veggies are super food for enhancing your breastmilk and also easily digestible. You can read here about Indian Food To Eat Post Delivery- Postnatal Diet. Breastfeeding is Tough in beginning

Yes, here, I would definitely like to mention that breastfeeding is a bit of a tough task for new moms in the beginning. Most of the newborn are not able to latch on the breast and take time to learn feeding. You as a mother do not need to give up, keep trying your baby will learn in 4 to 5 days max in 15 days. Trust once your baby will learn to latch on your breast, then your nursing session will definitely turn into a happy mommy baby bonding time.

Also, new moms may get sore nipples while your baby is learning to latch on your breast, and I know how painful this is. You can consult your doctor for a sore nipple, I used Nipcare Lanolin cream as per the advice of my doctor. You can use any good quality of lanolin cream, you can easily get one in your nearby medical store or online.
