Updated: Jan 13, 2022

Kids love to play with sand and you know sand play has so many benefits. We as a parent sometimes do not allow our kids to play with sand as it creates so much mess all around. But mommies and daddies do you know, sand play has its own benefits. Read on to know what are the benefits.

Best for sensory

It helps to develop a sense of touch through feeling the different textures of sand that is dry, damp, wet. Also moulding sand into different shapes or burying the objects in the sand and feeling them through the layers of sand develops the sensory experiences.

Learning through Play

Kids learn while playing and sand play is one of the best options to teach kids about numbers, alphabets or anything. You can use different objects available at home to teach shapes and let them explore with the sand.

Helps express emotions

Playing with free-flowing sand poses no restrictions, as they can do whatever they want with it. It also helps to calm down your kid if they are angry or crying. You can also play with them, as it is a great stress buster.

Expand the imaginations

Building a house or a castle in sand is not only a sand activity but actually it helps to expand their imaginations. Like my daughter always makes things similar to her surroundings, ice-cream, glass, plate, etc. Therefore I give her some mould toys such as cars, animals and other props that can encourage her creative genius furthermore.

Build attentions and concentrations

Kids find it difficult to focus on a particular thing for more than a few minutes. Sand play helps to engage your kid for a long time because kids get an opportunity to do different things with it. Therefore, sand play activity helps to focus on the task at hand and improves concentration.

Precautions to take during Sand Play

  1. If your kid is playing outdoors, always make sure the sand pit is in a clean area and not exposed to animal excreta.

  2. Make sure that the sandpit does not contain any sharp object or anything that may hurt or kid.

  3. Always supervise your kid while playing with sand, to avoid any kind of accidents like putting sand in sand, eyes or head.

  4. If your kid is playing with sand indoors, then make sure to put the sand in a big tub to avoid sand all over your room.

  5. While indoors, if possible make a habit to do sand play activity on the balcony. This way your kid will get some vitamin D also and your room will be sand free.
